This May, delve into the fascinating history of printing and its close connection to the maritime world. Inspired by the woodblock printing tools and works on display in the new Maritime City exhibition, this hands-on activity invites families to create their own “print” using styrofoam. Once the design is created, it will be printed using traditional block printing techniques.

Participants can design their own unique illustration or choose from templates provided by the Seaport Museum. The activity is open to children aged 5 and up and promises a fun and enriching experience for the whole family.

Before participating, it is recommended to visit the Maritime City exhibition and Bowne & Co. Stationers, where you can discover historic presses, vintage equipment, and more. Please note that access to the building at 207 Water Street requires going up and down a few steps.

Family Activity Weekends will take place from May 3rd to June 1st, from 11:00 am to 4:45 pm. The activities will be held indoors at 207 Water Street, but if the weather is nice, they may be moved outdoors to the cobblestone street in front of the building.

Please note that access to the South Street Seaport Museum’s historic ships and exhibition galleries is not included with the free activity. To explore the full museum experience, admission tickets can be purchased on-site or in advance. Tickets include access to the tall ship Wavertree (1885), the lightship Ambrose (1908) at Pier 16, the exhibitions at Schermerhorn Row (12 Fulton Street), and the new Maritime City exhibition at 213 Water Street. Located in the heart of New York’s historic harbor district, the South Street Seaport Museum preserves and interprets the city’s history as a major international port. Since its founding in 1967, the museum has housed an extensive collection of artworks, historical artifacts, a maritime library, exhibition galleries, functioning 19th-century printing shops, and a fleet of historic ships, all brought together to tell the story of “the place where New York began.”
