Driver of fatal pedestrian hit-and-run accident remains unidentified
Destiny Murrell, a 22-year-old woman from Brooklyn was pronounced dead early on Aug. 23 after a West Village hit-and-run accident.
The driver of a West Village hit-and-run accident that killed a young pedestrian over the weekend has yet to be found.
The NYPD has identified the 22-year-old pedestrian as Destiny Murrell of Brooklyn.
According to police, Murrell was hit by an unknown gray vehicle just before 5 a.m. Aug. 23 at the intersection of Washington Place and 6th Avenue.
NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined the unknown vehicle had attempted to merge from a parking lane on the far left side of 6th Avenue into northbound traffic as Murrell “grabbed and held onto the driver side door.”
According to a NYPD spokesperson, when the vehicle entered the intersection, Murrell fell and was subsequently run over by the vehicle’s left rear wheel.
The driver did not remain on scene.
After sustaining “severe trauma” to her head and torso, Murrell was transported by EMS to Bellevue Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
No arrests have been made and investigation efforts by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad remain ongoing.
